K-State football should be contenders in the Big 12 this year and apparently the Associated Press agrees with that statement, putting them at number 20 in their preseason polls.

Kansas State football will begin the 2017 season on the Top 25 polls, sitting at number 20 to start the year. The Wildcats head into another exciting year of Wildcat football under head coach Bill Snyder and should be able to make a strong push for the Big 12 Championship this year.

K-State was one of five Big 12 teams to make it into the rankings and were the third best team in the conference on the rankings. The other four teams were the Oklahoma Sooners (seventh), Oklahoma State Cowboys (tenth), West Virginia (22nd), and Texas (23rd).

Last year the Wildcats went 1-3 against those teams, defeating only Texas. Despite the Longhorns having a bad year in 2016 (losing to KU was the cherry on top of that cake), they always get national appeal simply because they’re the Texas Longhorns.

It’s no doubt that the two Oklahoma universities were ranked higher than the Wildcats because they’re both really solid teams. If Kansas State can defeat one of them this year, it’ll be huge for their chance at making it into the Big 12 Championship Game and possibly even receive a big into the College Football Playoff.

While the season hasn’t started yet, it’s hard not to get excited about Kansas State football this year. A lot of the same team is returning in 2017 and Jesse Ertz now has another year under his belt as a quarterback. Throw in the fact that the Cats have Mike McCoy running the football and a stout defense and why should we count KSU out in the Big 12?

The top five are Alabama coming in at number one, Ohio State at number two, Florida State ranked third, USC getting back into relevance at fourth in the nation, and Clemson rounding things out in that number five spot. All of those teams deserve to be ranked that high, but it would certainly be cool to see K-State football climb up the rankings and make it into the top five this season.

The toughest games for the Wildcats in 2017 are against Oklahoma at home in Manhattan and on the road against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. If the Cats can win one of those two games, they’ll be in good shape for the Big 12 Championship Game.
