Fantasy Football Quarterbacks to Target in 2017 – Number 11: CAM NEWTON

2016 Ranking: 17th

This time last year, Cam Newton was the top quarterback on all of the fantasy football boards. What we all witnessed was a major drop-off, as Newton produced only 254.3 points.

While Newton wasn’t worthy of the early round pick he earned last year, he’s still a great option to have as your starter. The best part about having Newton as your fantasy football quarterback is that the guy can take off at any moment and get major yardage with his legs.

Newton’s interceptions went up last year and his touchdowns went down significantly, which was concerning. Some people think that the style he plays will prevent him from having a real long career, but Newton is due for a bounce back season.

The good news about Cam Newton’s lackluster 2016 campaign is that he won’t be on many people’s radars when it comes to the draft. As such, you’ll be able to grab him after the 12th round and should be quite proud of landing him.

The knocks on Newton are the obvious ones. He doesn’t have a lot of help at wide receiver and Greg Olsen can’t catch every pass. Newton also missed two starts last year due to injury, which is to expected with a mobile quarterback who takes as big of hits as the former number one overall pick does.

Make sure if you draft Newton that you have a reliable backup (perhaps Alex Smith?) because he could miss a game or two.
