Fantasy Football Quarterbacks to Target in 2017 – Number 15: ALEX SMITH

2016 Ranking: 21st

Alex Smith doesn’t exactly put up big time numbers. He’s not going to throw the deep ball and get your team 300 yards passing every week. That’s typically why people shy away from Alex Smith in fantasy football, but I’m here to tell you that he’s worth drafting, especially as a backup. In fact, Smith is probably the best fantasy football backup to have on your bench.

The big thing with Smith is consistency. He’s not going to wow you with his numbers, but he’ll put up around the same amount of points every week. Smith doesn’t turn the ball over and he also does damage with his legs as well, rushing for nearly 500 yards in 2015.

Smith doesn’t turn the ball over and he also does damage with his legs.

Smith put up 224.8 points last year in standard PPR leagues and had one of his weaker seasons in fantasy football, but with major weapons like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce both established, look for Smith to improve in 2017.

Look, no one is going to jump for joy when drafting Alex Smith, but he’s the perfect backup to have on your bench. Even if you do start him, he’ll provide you with enough points to compete with your opponent. He takes care of the football and is always a threat to take off with the football.

Smith is a safe bet to start looking for after the 12th round, as not many others are going to be seeking him for their team. Unless, of course, you play in a league with several other Kansas City Chiefs fans. I once had someone in my league draft Smith in round one and he said later that he didn’t regret it at all.

To each their own, I guess.
