Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp Preview

Chris Conley – Wide Receiver

There is a lot riding on the third year improvement of Chris Conley. The Kansas City Chiefs have certainly put themselves in a position where they need it. Unfortunately, there really isn’t much in his career so far that would suggest much of a step forward.

Chris Conley brings solid speed to the Chiefs wide receiver corps. He’s a downfield threat who can pull away from a lot of defenders. He has flashed ability at times in his first two seasons, and there are a lot of fans that think he’s got what it takes to be a top receiver.

However, in his first two seasons in Kansas City, Chris Conley has amassed just 729 yards and one touchdown. That simply isn’t going to cut it. The Chiefs need a lot more from him, and I’m not sure it’s there to give. The biggest concern is that Conley doesn’t seem to be able to create separation consistently.

Conley is in no danger of losing a roster spot this year, but I would not say that his starting role is fully guaranteed. There are a lot of young guys on this roster who will be chomping at the bit to make their mark. If any of them can step up their game, there is most definitely a chance we see a new #2 guy in 2017.

Prediction

In fact, I have Chris Conley as the #3 receiver on the Kansas City Chiefs roster this year. Demarcus Robinson has been lighting things up in offseason practice sessions so far. While those practices are without pads or significant contact, it has still been impressive. Conley will not have an easy road ahead of him, and I think he takes on a new role for the team.
