MOST DISAPPOINTING ROYALS SO FAR – NUMBER 4: KELVIN HERRERA

After several years of having absolute dominant closers, Royals fans are a little on edge whenever the team has a small lead and Kelvin Herrera comes into the game. They never felt that way when he was the seventh inning guy back in 2014 and 2015.

To this point of the season, Herrera has a 4.50 ERA and 19 saves. He’s given up seven home runs already after only giving up six all of last season and five in 2015.

Herrera technically has only blown two saves, but it feels like he’s been getting shelled a lot more than that. He struggled against Houston this season, giving up big homers to them in both series and costing the Royals much needed wins.

Herrera isn’t bad this season, but he has been disappointing. His 19 saves have him tied for eighth in the league, but it does hurt seeing Greg Holland at the top of that list with 28 saves.

Some relievers aren’t meant to be closers, but it has looked like Herrera has turned it around as of lately. That 4.50 ERA is an eye sore for closers though and hopefully he can become that shutdown closer that the Royals need.

We’ve all witnessed how a bad closer can give the opposition momentum.
