Five Biggest Rivals – Number Five: Texas Longhorns

Remember when the Texas Longhorns always seemed to find KU Basketball at the end of the season one game away from ending their Big 12 conference streak? Back when Kevin Durant roamed the campus in Austin, the Longhorns were a worthy college basketball foe, and a trip to the Frank Erwin Center was dreadful for the Jayhawks.

It’s easy to despise the Texas Longhorns because they seemingly get all the glory, and for what?

Now, the hook ’em horns have seemed to dissipate from the bleachers of the Frank Erwin Center. Texas has struggled as of late to find footing in the college basketball world with new coach pickups and promising players finding every which way to injure themselves. We were reminded, however, of the near dormant rivalry last season in football.

A game that most likely will go down as the turning point for the KU Football program, and the ultimate end of Charlie Strong’s career in Texas. On November 19, 2016 the Texas Longhorns visited Memorial Stadium. They left with the most embarrassing loss of the season, not to say Kansas was definitely improving last season, but there were multiple chances for a Texas victory.

At the time, the Longhorns were just 5-5 and already contemplating about firing Strong from his position. The loss in Lawrence was the final straw and Charlie Strong was fired the following Saturday after the game. My guess is that Texas may be looking for revenge next season as they instill new hope in Tom Herman.

It’s easy to despise the Texas Longhorns because they seemingly get all the glory, and for what? Their last National title in football was back in 2005 and their basketball team has gone nowhere lately. They’re fifth on this list.
