Kansas City Royals send two players to 2017 All-Star Game
The Kansas City Royals will have at least two players representing them in Miami for the 2017 All-Star Game. They have a chance to send a third player to the big game, but only with the help of the fans.
Voting results for the 2017 All-Star Game were revealed on Sunday evening and the Kansas City Royals have at least two guys headed to Miami! Salvador Perez won the fan vote at catcher and Jason Vargas was elected to the game as one of the many pitchers for the American League team.
Mike Moustakas has a chance to make it to Miami, but has to win the final fan vote in order to make the trip. Moose made the 2015 All-Star Game the same way, but the Royals were the best team in the American League then. Can Royals fans get him back to All-Star status?
As for the guaranteed All-Stars, both were very deserving. Perez is one of the best catchers in baseball and potentially THE best at the position. He’s slashing .290/.318/.525 with 16 home runs and 51 RBI in 74 games this season.
Perez will be making his fifth straight All-Star appearance (fourth straight as a starter) and is the first Royal to do such a task since George Brett did it during the hey days.
As for Jason Vargas, he’s been dealing all season long for the Royals. He’s holding down an incredible 2.22 ERA and 12-3 record after 16 starts and hasn’t missed a beat during the first half of the season. Vargas could actually end up starting for the American League squad, as he pitches for Kansas City on Wednesday and the All-Star Game isn’t until the following Tuesday.
Moustakas deserves to make it in, but he’s up against some tough competition. As I mentioned before, Moose made it to the 2015 All-Star Game through the fan vote, so Royals nation has come through before. It’s definitely a possibility.
As for the rest of the All-Star Game, some former members of the Kansas City Royals made it too. Wade Davis (Cubs), Zack Greinke (Diamondbacks), and Greg Holland (Rockies) all earned their way to Miami. It’ll be fun to watch those guys throw from the mound next week in Miami.
While this isn’t quite like the 2015 season where seven Royals made it, it’s not as bad as the days when only one Royal would make it in due to needing a representative. Perez, Vargas, and Moustakas would all be deserving of playing in this year’s campaign and that’s pretty awesome for the Kansas City Royals.
