Missouri Tigers: Five Baseball Players Heading to Major League Baseball
By Jesse Holt
The 2017 MLB Draft saw 5 Missouri Tigers, including the heralded Tanner Houck, selected over the three days. Do any of the five have potential for Major League Success?
The Missouri Tigers have a history of developing professional athletes. Fans likely can name Tigers among the pro ranks in basketball and football, but likely have more difficulty naming Mizzou-Made baseball stars.
Recent success has been difficult for the Tigers to find on the baseball diamond. Mizzou has had some successes though, including an NCAA championship back in the 1950s. Despite a relative lack of recent success, Missouri can proudly point to current MLB stars Max Scherzer, Ian Kinsler, and Kyle Gibson as former Tigers.
The MLB draft is quite unlike any other in professional sports. At 40 rounds, its sheer size completely dwarfs the NFL (7 rounds), NHL (7), and NBA (2). The biggest difference lies in the overwhelming odds that players drafted in MLB may not even see the field for their parent club.
At five players, the draft class of 2017 for the Missouri Tigers is the largest since 2006. The group consists of RHP Tanner Houck, RHP Bryce Montes de Oca, INF Robbie Glendinning, C Brett Bond, and RHP Cole Bartlett.
