Is Kareem Hunt Starting At Running Back?

There may not be any player who has gotten more praise in the Kansas City Chiefs early workouts than rookie running back Kareem Hunt. That makes me especially happy because I’ve been touting this kid since well before the draft. However, the Chiefs have a lot of talent at running back, and taking the starting job won’t be an easy thing.

Hunt will have a real challenge from Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Both of those backs are talented players who already know the offense and the players around them. While the Chiefs running game wasn’t what we were used to last year, it would not be fair to say Ware had a bad season. 921 yards isn’t terrible, especially for a back with Ware’s style.

There is also CJ Spiller for the Chiefs to consider. The veteran running back was signed as a free agent and is getting a shot to resurrect his career. If he can stay healthy and if he can get back to his old ways, he is a dangerous playmaker. That is the kind of back that the Chiefs are looking for. However, the “ifs” here are pretty big.

For the most part, the prevailing thought seems to be that the Chiefs will employ a bit of a running back by committee approach this year. However, if there is any player that has a chance of taking a starting role and running with it, my money is on Kareem Hunt.
