Every Royals first-round draft pick since 2000: Mitch Maier (2003)

The Royals had another first-round selection in 2003 and with the 30th pick, they chose Mitch Maier out of the University of Toledo. Unlike some of the other names on this list so far, Maier actually made it to the big leagues!

Maier was never a power hitter, only hitting ten home runs during his six years in Kansas City. He only had two seasons where he played in more than 100 games and he just never really shined as a major league player.

His career slash line as a Royal was .248/.327/.344 in six seasons. In 2012, he was designated for assignment and chose to hit free agency where the Red Sox picked him up. Maier never got back to the majors and capped off another poor first round for the Royals.

The major difference between Maier and some of the other guys to appear on here, however, is that at least he made it to Kansas City. Mitch Maier had potential, but in the end, it just didn’t work out.

Mauer is still in the Royals organization, currently serving as the Director of baseball operations.
