Every Royals first-round draft pick since 2000: Bobby Witt Jr. (2019)

After a disastrous 2018 season that saw the Royals lose 100 games, they landed the No. 2 pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Fortunately for them, the choice with the No. 2 pick was obvious, as Bobby Witt Jr. was the second-best prospect in that year’s draft and had all of the intangibles to be a star.

Witt Jr. played high school ball at Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, Texas and was already used to stardom. Not only was he the stud of his high school team, but his father — Bobby Witt — played in the major leagues.

The Royals are excited about Witt Jr. has to offer and they saw glimpses of that potential during his first season in the minors. The No. 2 pick slashed .262/.317/.354 with the Arizona League that year.

While Witt Jr. didn’t have a minor league season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s hope that he might be able to find his way onto the 2021 roster at some point. He wowed all of us at Royals summer camp last year and showed that even though he’s young, he has star potential and could be the face of this franchise for years to come.
