Kansas City Chiefs Release Jeremy Maclin

What Is The Fallout?

The big gain here for the Kansas City Chiefs comes on the financial side of things. Because the Chiefs waited until after June 1st, they save $10 million against the salary cap for 2017. That is obviously a decent sum of money to free up.

The move should also open up $8.6 million in cap space for 2018 according to Over The Cap. They now show that the Chiefs would be just slightly over the projected cap for next season. Previously KC was projected to be more than $9 million over. So there is some obvious relief there.

Given a different situation in the receiving corps, this move would actually be pretty well praised by most. However, given that the Chiefs do not have an established top receiver, or even a reliable #2 guy, there is a lot of angst.

Wide receiver clearly jumps to the top of the positions of interest when the Chiefs come back onto the field for offseason workouts. If Andy Reid didn’t like being asked over and over about players not being at OTAs, he’s going to be really frustrated with the wide receiver questions.
