Alex Smith Trade Talk

What Kind Of Market Is There?

Another big factor facing the Kansas City Chiefs is the impending market for quarterbacks next year. While there are always teams looking for a quarterback, you have to know what other options they have available. An early look at the 2018 quarterback market doesn’t show a trade-friendly venue for the Chiefs.

The biggest hurdle here is that there is a ton of hype surrounding the 2018 quarterback class for the draft. Analysts are calling Sam Darnold of USC and Josh Allen of Wyoming very likely top picks in the draft. After those two top names, there are a number of highly-touted quarterbacks also looking to head to the NFL.

On top of that, unless something changes soon, Alex Smith will not be the most highly-coveted veteran quarterback either. Washington’s Kirk Cousins appears to be headed for Free Agency in 2018. For whatever reason, the team and player appear to be on very different pages. If Cousins becomes a free agent, he is the top name on the market.

In truth, Alex Smith will not be very high on the priority list for teams looking for a new quarterback. Unless he has a tremendous 2017 season, it’s hard to see anyone making a move for him until after the 2018 NFL Draft.
