Kansas City Chiefs: Way too early for Alex Smith trade talk

Alex Smith Trade Talk
How Do You Determine The Value?
When talking about trading Alex Smith, what I’ve seen so far is many people citing what the Kansas City Chiefs gave up to get him back in 2013. In the first year of the Andy Reid/John Dorsey era, the team gave up a pair of second round picks for their new starting quarterback. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that this is the price tag many fans want to see.
However, it isn’t that simple. It is an extremely rare situation when a player will have the same value in two different trades. A lot has happened since that 2013 trade, and a lot has yet to happen. So to assume the value would be the same is simply wrong.
In fact, I will say that Smith needs to have an outstanding season in order to even have the value of one of those second round picks. Fans need to remember the reason why there was so much talk about drafting a quarterback this year. Nobody was satisfied with Alex Smith’s play in 2016. It’s foolish to think another team would be.
On top of his play, you are talking about a 33 year old quarterback with no “elite” years, and is coming off a statistically poor year. So the first round pick mentioned by Arrowhead Addict’s Matt Connor in his conversation with Josh Briscoe on 810…probably unrealistic at best.
