Kansas City Chiefs: Positive storylines from 2017 offseason
CHIEFS DRAFTED A QUARTERBACK IN THE FIRST ROUND
Throughout my 26 years on this Earth, I had never seen the KC Chiefs draft a quarterback in the first round. I was starting to think that I’d never see that day come, but finally… On a glorious night in 2017, the Chiefs traded up to draft Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the tenth overall pick.
A lot of scoff was thrown Kansas City’s way from the media, as they thought the Chiefs reached too high for Mahomes, but I, along with everyone in Kansas City, disagreed. With teams like the Saints, Cardinals, and Texans all interested in drafting Mahomes, the Chiefs did what they had to do and traded up to get their guy.
Perhaps it’s the fact that the Chiefs did something they hadn’t done since 1983, but I was thrilled with this selection.
Had Kansas City stayed put at pick 27, Mahomes likely would gone to the Saints with the very next pick and then the Texans and Chiefs would have been fighting to trade up and grab Deshaun Watson.
Perhaps it’s the fact that the Chiefs did something they hadn’t done since 1983, but I was thrilled with this selection. The KC Chiefs identified a quarterback they saw leading the team in the future and locked him down. They also only gave up a first round next year and a third round in order to do so. That could end up being the steal of the century.
The only negative blowback from all of this is that people are going to assume there’s controversy where there isn’t any. Alex Smith is the starter in 2017 while Patrick Mahomes will sit and learn.
