OTAs have begun for the KC Chiefs and in the mean time, former Jets, Buccaneers, and Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis is still a free agent. Should the Chiefs look into signing him?

Two years ago, Darrelle Revis was one of the hottest free agents on the open market in the National Football League. He ended up returning to the Jets, the team that drafted him, on a mega contract worth $70 million over five years.

That contract only kept Revis in New York for two seasons before he was released at the beginning of the 2017 calendar yet. A lot of that was due to just how large his contract was, but Revis also struggled mightily during the 2016 season.

Struggled might be too nice of a word honestly. Revis was awful in 2016 and looked like a shell of his former self.

Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News wrote a piece about how Revis’ last shot at making it in the NFL was with the Cowboys and had this to say,

"Revis looked terrible covering wide receivers in 2016, and there’s no indication that his eroding skills will get a new life at a new position. It will also be hard to shake the “disinterested” dissing he deservedly got.More from KC KingdomWin $650 GUARANTEED Plus $100 Off NFL Sunday Ticket With Caesars, FanDuel and DraftKings Kansas Promos! This Plus-Money Bobby Witt Jr. Prop Bet is on Fire (Hit in 15/21 Games)! How to Bet on the Chiefs vs. Cardinals in NFL Preseason Week 2The Royals Need to Extend Bobby Witt Jr. ImmediatelyThe 3 Most Intriguing Games on the Chiefs’ Schedule"

One thing is for sure in sports and that’s that athletes get old nearly overnight. Darrelle Revis is a perfect example of that, as he looked great during his first year back with the Jets and then was getting torched constantly the following season. He’s only 31 years old, but for a cornerback, that’s old.

The Kansas City Chiefs also don’t really need Revis. Marcus Peters is their shutdown corner and they have guys like Terrance Mitchell, Steven Nelson, and Phillip Gaines fighting it out for that second spot on the team. Their young group of guys would provide a much better secondary than Revis would.

Not to mention Revis had some legal problems earlier this year when he beat up two men recording him with a cell phone. He won’t be disciplined by the league, as the charges were dismissed, but this is still unnecessary baggage for a team like the KC Chiefs, whose only goal is to make it to and win the Super Bowl.

So no, I don’t think the Kansas City Chiefs should target Darrelle Revis in free agency, but it’s hard not to think about it. If Revis does rebound back to his former shutdown “Revis Island” days, then Chiefs fans will be kicking themselves for not inking him, but for now, this team looks good to go. That’s a positive thing for sure.
