MOST DESPISED ATHLETES IN KC – NUMBER 6: ELVIS GRBAC

When Kansas City Chiefs fans are asked about the great quarterback controversies this town has seen, almost everyone will say Elvis Grbac and Rich Gannon was the biggest one in franchise history. It’s also one of the biggest blunders the organization has ever made.

Grbac signed with the Chiefs in 1997 and looked to be the right man for the job, when he led the Chiefs to one of the greatest comebacks ever on Monday Night Football against the hated Oakland Raiders. When Grbac got injured, however, backup quarterback Rich Gannon stepped in and did a great job, yet Grbac was still chosen to start in the team’s playoff game against the Broncos.

It’s not that Chiefs fans disliked Grbac because he sucked, it’s because he wasn’t the right pick.

As we all know, the Chiefs lost that game by four points and the team later picked Grbac to be the future at the quarterback position despite Gannon clearly being the better leader. Gannon made things worse by inking a deal with the Raiders and took them to a Super Bowl years later (at least they lost).

Grbac spent four seasons in Kansas City and threw for 10,643 yards during that time with 66 touchdowns and 47 interceptions and a record of 26-21. It’s not that Chiefs fans disliked Grbac because he sucked, it’s because he wasn’t the right pick and Rich Gannon should have been the Chiefs quarterback after the 1998 season.

The Chiefs didn’t re-sign Grbac after the 2000 season and he went to Baltimore for the final year of his NFL career. His career ended because he refused to re-negotiate his contract with the Ravens and was out of football after 2001.

Again, the hatred for Elvis Grbac isn’t necessarily that he sucked, but that the team picked him over Rich Gannon, a guy who ended up taking a team to a Super Bowl. That part still stings for most Chiefs fans.
