The Kansas City Royals are calling up Seth Maness to the major league ranks and he’ll join the team in Tampa Bay for this current series. In order to add Maness to the roster, someone will need to be booted from the 40-man roster.

Personally, I think it’s time that the Kansas City Royals realize that Chris Young isn’t an effective pitcher anymore and that he should be the one taken off the 40-man roster. The other options could be Scott Alexander or Jake Junis, but neither of them deserve to be booted at the moment.

Young just isn’t the same pitcher he was when the Royals acquired him in 2015 on a one-year deal. He was phenomenal for the Royals that season and played a huge part in them winning it all that year. That’s why this is tough for any Royals fan to admit because without Young, this team might not have broken their World Series drought.

Since then, however, Young has not been good. In 2016 he was named a starter heading into the season and ended the year with a 6.19 ERA in 34 games (13 starts) while allowing 28 home runs. This season he’s not looking much better, currently sporting a 5.93 ERA in eight games.

Most recently, Young was shellacked for four runs in one inning and only lasted through three innings. It was his lone start of the season and only happened because Ian Kennedy is on the disabled list. The Royals somehow came back and won the game in extra innings despite how dreadful their offense has been, but Young’s performance was not good.

With Seth Maness coming to the big leagues, the Royals need to part ways with someone on the 40-man and Young appears to be the best option. Mike Minor has looked good as a long reliever, which is what Young’s role was in the first place. There’s really not a spot for Chris Young on this team anymore.

Chris Young is similar to Christian Colon. Fans really only want him on the team for the sentimental value that he brings. Young had some great pitching performances during the 2015 postseason and was re-signed to a two-year deal because of that. He’s been a big disappointment after inking that deal and it’s time for the organization to stop living in the moment.

What do you think, Royals fans? Should Chris Young be the guy booted from the 40-man roster or do you think someone else would be a better choice?
