James Bell – Monarchs: “Cool Papa”

Could you even ask for a better nickname than the one bestowed on former Kansas City Monarchs outfielder James Bell? Known as “Cool Papa”, Bell was one of those players that you really just have to wish had gotten a shot in Major League Baseball.

The speedy center-fielder was a demon on the base path. His ability to steal both second and third was uncanny. As a switch hitter, he made himself an even more dangerous offensive weapon. Players like that do not come around often.

Cool Papa Bell would be the fifth player inducted into the Negro Leagues Hall of Fame. He would later enter the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, getting at least some recognition for his incredible talents. While he may not be a widely known player for mainstream fans, that nickname is clearly one of the best ever.
