Bret Saberhagen – Royals: “Geisha Boy”

You probably didn’t even know this was Bret Saberhagen‘s nickname. I’m guessing the former Kansas City Royals ace didn’t want you to know that either. However, sometimes we have no control over these things. You don’t get to pick your own nickname, and that was clearly the case here.

Bret Saberhagen apparently earned this nickname from fellow starting pitcher Mark Gubicza (a reference to a 1958 Jerry Lewis movie). Saberhagen’s sense of style was clearly a source of entertainment for his teammates. Looking back at some pictures from the 80’s…I totally get it.

Of course, when you’re a Cy Young winner on a World Series winning team, you get a little latitude on these kinds of things. That is, except with your friends and teammates who should always keep you in check. “Geisha Boy” may not have been what he was called in public, but it’s a name he earned from those closest to him.
