Some nicknames are iconic. Some replace a player’s given name. Only “Bo” could become the center of a cultural phenomenon. The Kansas City Royals superstar outfielder became the center of the advertising world at his peak. However, almost nobody could have told you what his real name was. To most people, he simply was Bo Jackson.
“Bo Knows” was the advertising equivalent of “Like Mike” when Nike owned a virtual monopoly on sporting equipment and apparel. With Jackson being a two-sport star, there was no shortage of advertising contracts at his fingertips. The man even had a Saturday morning cartoon (along with Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretsky).
On the field, all Bo Jackson did was the impossible. Whether is was snapping baseball bats like toothpicks, running up the outfield wall to rob a homerun, or simply burying Brian Bosworth’s career with a brutal run, Jackson defined the pinnacle of athleticism during his reign. I’ll bet most of you reading now still had no idea his real name was Vincent.
