Royals’ Cy Young Award Winners

1994: David Cone

Back in the 1980s of the Royals’ franchise, the pitching aces seemed to come out in droves from the MLB Draft, and David Cone was one of them. Being drafted a season after the Royals’ first World Series crown, David Cone would play one season with the Royals.

Soon, Cone would go on to play for the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays until he would be sent back to Kauffman Stadium for two seasons starting in 1993. In his second season, David Cone would win the only Cy Young Award of his career.

David Cone would be one of the last great aces of the more well known era of Royals baseball.

During Cone’s only Cy Young award season, he sported a 2.94 ERA, a 76.2 winning percentage, and throw 132 strikeouts. Cone would impress as a Royal and eventually improve his scouting report for other teams.

David Cone would also be one of the last great aces of the more well known era of Royals baseball until their obscure years in the early 2000s.

It is hard to see the Kansas City Royals taking the big name pitchers in the MLB Draft, but in the late and early 1980s the Royals made power players for some of the well known MLB names. David Cone was one of them and even though most of his loyalty is with the Yankees, he had his best years while with the Royals.
