As a program, the Kansas City Royals have seen plenty of pitching aces on their team. Only the most elite pitchers get the Cy Young award, and the Royals have proudly seen some of their own win the prestigious award.

When the Kansas City Royals won the World Series in 1985, they won it all with some now common Kauffman Stadium household names. Many names that ring a bell among fans of the Royals are George Brett and Bret Saberhagen.

Bret Saberhagen is probably one of the most famous pitchers the Royals have had, and probably always will, especially considering that the Royals have switched their focus on the aspect of pitching. Instead of starting pitchers, the Royals have switched to a dominant bullpen (well, through the dominant run in 2013-2016, they did).

Closers like Kelvin Herrera, Joakim Soria, and Wade Davis are now recognizable names from the Royals bullpen. Will the Royals ever have another pitcher earn the Cy Young award? Maybe not. Even though the closers of the Royals are great pitchers, they may not be Cy Young material due to their limited time on the field.

The Royals still develop a lot of players for their rosters on the field, but one of the spots Kansas City no longer truly develops is on the mound. This explains the lack of Cy Young winners for the Kansas City Royals, as the last guy to win the big award in Kansas City was in 2009.

Who all did win a Cy Young while donning a Royals uniform? Let’s take a look.
