The Kansas City Chiefs had nice selections in the 2017 NFL Draft. How did their draft match up with the rest of the division? Who had the best draft out of the wild, wild AFC West?

By now it’s common knowledge for KC Chiefs fans that the team spent their first round draft pick on Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech. The Chiefs traded up to get him, showing they’re determined to keep the franchise as Super Bowl contenders even once Alex Smith‘s time as a Chief has come to an end.

The Chiefs also picked up Tanoh Kpassagnon, Kareem Hunt, Jehu Chesson, Ukeme Eligwe, and Leon McQuay III. They had ten picks originally and only ended up drafting six guys, which is perfectly fine. It would have been highly unlikely that all ten draft picks would have made the team, so trading those picks to get lockdown regular season players made perfect sense.

Kansas City did a nice job with their draft, but it’ll be a tough task to repeat as champions in the AFC West with all of the fierce competition within the division. The Chiefs swept the AFC West last year, but that’d be extremely difficult to do two years in a row (though they’ve only lost one divisional game in the past two seasons).

While a lot of our content since the draft has been fixated on how KC did in the draft, what about the other three teams in the AFC West? Did the Broncos, Chargers, or Raiders scare anyone with their drafts? Let’s take a look.
