As usual, the top storyline for the Kansas City Chiefs in this year’s draft is about quarterbacks. For their part, the Chiefs are putting in the work.

If the Kansas City Chiefs decide against drafting a quarterback early in 2017, it won’t be for a lack of information. The Chiefs have been heavily involved in scouting out this year’s crop of quarterbacks. So as the debate rages on between fans, pundits, and analysts, the team is getting all of their facts together.

The Chiefs went out of their way to interview all of the top prospects at the 2017 NFL Combine. Since then, the team has been active in looking at the next tier of quarterbacks. That includes Davis Webb of California, Garrett Fugate of Central Missouri, and Tyler O’Connor of Michigan State.

Those fans who are still hoping for a top quarterback prospect in the first round shouldn’t lose heart though. The Chiefs have shown quite a bit of interest in Mitchell Trubisky from North Caolina. Many pundits consider him to be the top quarterback in this draft class. Of course, pursuing Trubisky would likely require KC to trade up in the upcoming draft.

It remains relatively certain that the Chiefs will draft a quarterback at some point in the draft. The KC front office has made changes at the quarterback position every year since John Dorsey and Andy Reid came to town. With the departure of Nick Foles this offseason, there is an opening, and the draft is the most likely means of filling it.

However, the team leadership has insisted that Alex Smith is the starter. That means the Chiefs are free to pursue a number of options. That would include Free Agency after the draft, bringing in a veteran as they have in the past. So there is no guarantee that the team will draft a quarterback at all. It’s just likely that they do.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a big decision to make in this year’s draft. Whatever that decision turns out to be, it won’t have been made from a position of ignorance. The Chiefs are doing every bit of diligence they possibly can to help make their choice at quarterback. All we can really do at this point is sit back and watch…and hope it’s the right decision.
