Kansas City Royals Top Players To Watch: #7

Raul Mondesi Jr/Cheslor Cuthbert/Whit Merrifield – 2B

As of now, the starting second base slot for the Kansas City Royals is still up in the air. The Royals have a number of prospects or young guys who “could” become quality players there. However, to say that anyone has stepped up to take the job is not true. Earlier this offseason, manager Ned Yost even suggested the potential of using a rotation there.

Currently the leading options appear to be Whit Merrifield, Cheslor Cuthbert, and Raul Mondesi Jr. Each player offers certain talents that are intriguing, but each also comes with a number of question marks. The fact that this position isn’t decided yet is concerning, so we’ll see how it plays out.

For my money, I want Whit Merrifield to get another shot. When called up last season, Merrifield showed some real promise until opposing pitchers had enough scouting material to go after him. That’s a big hurdle for every professional player, but it can be conquered. If Merrifield has learned from his experience and improved, he can be a steady hand in the middle of the field as well as in the lineup.
