The Kansas City Chiefs have made a move to boost their run defense by signing defensive tackle Bennie Logan to a one-year deal.

There has been a good deal of speculation as to what the Kansas City Chiefs would do to replace Dontari Poe at defensive tackle. At least part of the answer came today when the Chiefs signed former Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan to a one-year deal. Logan should provide KC with some immediate help to their run defense.

It has been assumed for a while now that Dontari Poe would be leaving, but this move seals the deal. With Bennie Logan on the roster, there really is no room for Poe. Logan should be expected to take on the starting role this season, and being used in obvious run situations. However, I do think the Chiefs will make a supplemental move here.

Pairing Bennie Logan with a draft pick makes a lot of sense for the Chiefs. That will give their rookie a year to develop before having to be used in heavy rotation. That is exactly how Kansas City likes to address potential holes in the roster. I wouldn’t be surprised if this player was selected early in the draft.

An added benefit of signing Bennie Logan is that he should actually be an upgrade over Dontari Poe in the run defense. Don’t get that twisted. Poe is still the better overall player. However, Logan excels at commanding double teams and holding the point of attack. Those were two areas where Poe’s game had fallen off since his back problems began.

Overall, I like this move a lot for the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s an aggressive approach to fixing the position that doesn’t wall the team off from making moves for the future. The ultimate answer at defensive tackle will come through the draft. Bennie Logan just gives that player, and the team, some breathing room.
