Sporting KC: Match Grades Against DC United

Sporting KC Match Grades
Individual Performances
There were actually quite a few players who had good showings tonight. That even includes the offense, despite not actually scoring any points. The top two performances of the night though, go to Tim Melia and Gerso Fernandes.
Tim Melia was pretty fantastic all night. The veteran goalkeeper pulled off a number of quality saves, including a double save on a penalty kick. DC United had several quality attempts to put a shot in the net, but KC held. That is due in large part to the efforts of Melia. Pitching a shutout will always warrant some attention. Making some brilliant stops along the way gets you even more.
In his debut for Sporting KC, Gerso Fernandes showed off some impressive talent. The Guinea-Bissau native was all over the field for Sporting and had a pair of close chances at scoring. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to find the back of the net. There is a lot to like about Fernandes moving forward, but his night was incomplete without a goal.

It was a disappointing result to not get a win in the opener. However, Sporting KC did earn a draw and a point, so it’s not all bad. KC will have to do better as the season moves forward though. There are a lot of expectations on this season, so it’s time to produce.
