The Journey to 13 Straight

Title Number Five: 2008-2009 Season

Following the national championship season, Kansas would lose tons of talent to the 2008 NBA Draft. The Jayhawks would keep Sherron Collins, Brady Morningstar, and Tyrel Reed. Kansas would also open spots in their roster for freshman Marcus Morris, Markieff Morris, Travis Releford, and Tyshawn Taylor.

Sherron Collins would lead the way with Cole Aldrich providing help being the few returners from the previous season. Other than Sherron and Cole, KU would have an otherwise very young team. The Jayhawks started the preseason with a 24th nationwide ranking

The Jayhawks would get crucial AP Top 25 wins against 14th ranked Tennessee, third ranked Oklahoma, and 11th ranked Missouri (what, they were good?) to wrap up most of the regular season and win the Big 12 outright.

KU basketball would drop the first game in the Big 12 conference tournament and end their streak of back-to-back tournament wins losing to Baylor. They would start the postseason selected as a number three seed in the NCAA Tournament.

After breezing through the first two rounds of the tournament to beat North Dakota State and Dayton, the Jayhawks would fall in the Sweet Sixteen to Michigan State, ending a decent run in the postseason.
