Kansas University basketball has become a college known for their ability to acquire “one and done” players who play for a year and then decide to enter the NBA Draft.
Bill Self has created a legacy with the Kansas Jayhawks basketball program and his recruiting brings in names as distinguished as he is. From five star NBA Draft destined freshman to four star surprises, Self has recruited the likes of them all. However, he has done an especially good job of attracting the “one and done” players that spend just a single season at the NCAA level before heading to the NBA.
Playing in arguably the best conference in America, Bill Self needs to grab all the help he can get when it comes to recruiting. Self is chasing after his 13th straight conference season titles. These superstar “one and dones” help with that. Not to mention getting help with his deep tournament runs and holding off pesky in conference rivals.
It is an impressive list of star players that have spent a single season playing in Allen Fieldhouse. These players who have found a mutually benevicial relationship with Bill Self that allows them to pursue their NBA dreams. Meanwhile, Self has built as impressive a resume as any college basketball coach could hope for.
While there are many critics to this recruiting path that Bill Self utilizes, there is no denying its effectiveness. Many of the players that Self has coached for just one year have gone on to impressive NBA careers. There are, of course, some who have fallen short. However, that has little bearing on Self’s legacy.
