The Kansas City Chiefs have been fortunate enough to have a reliable backup on their roster over the past four seasons. Will that continue in 2017?

By now, you’ve probably heard the news that the KC Chiefs are not planning to pick up Nick Foles‘ option for 2017 (Link courtesy of Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star). That means that Foles will be hitting free agency in a few weeks and the Chiefs will be in the market for a new guy to backup Alex Smith (let’s be real… He’ll be the starter in 2017 whether fans like it or not).

Last season the Chiefs had three young quarterbacks on their roster before inking Foles to a one-year deal with an option for a second. The decision to sign Foles instead of rolling with one of the other guys shows the lack of confidence the team had in those others to lead the team.

It was a good thing the Chiefs signed Foles too, as Smith missed one week of the regular season with concussion-like symptoms. Foles didn’t play all that great in that game, but he did enough to prevent a loss, and that win ultimately was the difference between the Chiefs winning the AFC West over the Oakland Raiders.

While there is a chance that Foles could return to Kansas City, I’m not going to list him on here. He’s good enough to earn a starting job somewhere and I’ll be shocked if a team needing a starter doesn’t snatch him up.

So, who else could be the backup to Alex Smith? Let’s take a look.
