Kansas City Chiefs: DeSean Jackson Could Reunite With Andy Reid
By Ben Almquist
How Much Would DeSean Jackson Cost?
Of course the big question in any free agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs will come down to whether they can afford it. As it stands, the Chiefs currently have around $3.5 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap. That is not a lot to work with, though they can add much more space with some simple moves.
As for DeSean Jackson, his last contract was the three-year deal worth $24 million ($8 million/year). His cap number for the first year of that contract was $4.25 million. Fortunately, at 30 years old Jackson is unlikely to get another contract at that level. If the Chiefs were to pursue the veteran, he would likely cost significantly less than that last deal.
Over The Cap:
The ideal contract the Chiefs could sign for DeSean Jackson would probably be similar to the one
signed with the Ravens in 2014. Smith went to Baltimore on a three-year deal worth just $10 million ($3.5 million/year). However, Smith was older when he signed that deal.
Ultimately, the Chiefs would likely be able to get DeSean Jackson under contract for something in between his recent deal and that signed by Sean Smith. Of course, that is a lot of room and it remains unclear just how much the Chiefs intend to spend this offseason, and on whom.
The Chiefs could make this deal happen, but that would likely be the extent of their Free Agency actions.
