FIRST START OF 2014 – April 8th, 2014

With a promising 2013 premiere to his name, Yordano Ventura was ready to prove that he could compete to be the ace for the Royals in 2014.

James Shields got that nod, but Yordano Ventura sure impressed on his first trip to the mound for the boys in blue in what would end up being a special year for Kansas City.

In that start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Ventura threw for six innings (the most in his career to that point) and didn’t allow a single run. He yielded two hits to the Rays batters, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out six. Ventura was throwing fire that day.

Unfortunately the Royals would go on to struggle at the dish and wound up losing 1-0, but Ventura’s performance that day showed just what type of pitcher he could be.

This will go down as one of the best games of his career.

The next game he started he pitched seven innings and allowed only two runs during that stretch. Just an incredible start for the young flamethrower.
