At a charity function for NFL Play 60 today, Eric Berry revealed that his agent is talking with the Kansas City Chiefs.

One of the biggest offseason story lines for the Kansas City Chiefs this year is the contract situation for star safety Eric Berry. The two sides were unable to work out a deal in 2016, which forced the Chiefs to use the Franchise Tag on Berry. Naturally, the All Pro safety responded with a tremendous season. Now, it has been revealed that contract talks have started back up.

At a charity event promoting the NFL Play 60 program, Eric Berry revealed to reporters that his agent has been talking with the Chiefs. This development isn’t necessarily surprising, but it is encouraging for fans who are anxious for news. Kansas City has no backup plan should Berry leave in Free Agency.

There will still be hurdles to face during these contract talks. There is no doubt that Eric Berry has earned himself a huge pay day. However, the Chiefs are tight against the salary cap and need to do whatever they can to try and keep the numbers down. Whether or not Berry is open to that idea remains to be seen. His camp wanted a top contract last season, so it’s hard to imagine that has changed.

For his own part, Eric Berry says he wants to stay with the Chiefs. So that, at least, is good news. Hopefully General Manager John Dorsey can get this deal worked out quickly. Having Berry locked up long term would be a huge check in the box for the team.

The Kansas City Chiefs still have a very strong Super Bowl window to work with. So keeping top talent players like Eric Berry is vitally important. Not to mention the fact that Berry is an emotional leader for the team and fan favorite. This deal needs to get done.
