Kansas City Chiefs: Way Too Early 2017 NFL Mock Draft
ROUND 3 – PICK 104: ISAIAH FORD, WR (VIRGINIA TECH)
I wasn’t crazy about drafting a wide receiver in the third round, but looking at the production of the wide receivers this past season gave me no choice. The Chiefs go with Isaiah Ford out of Virginia Tech to become their next offensive weapon.
What’s great about Ford is that he can line up just about anywhere along the offense and excel there.
Last season the Chiefs struggled to get the ball to any of their receivers not named Tyreek Hill. Jeremy Maclin was dinged up and missed a good chunk of the season and Chris Conley came through near the end, but was basically invisible for the early part of the season.
Ford had two monster seasons for the Hokies in 2015 and 2016, recording over 1,000 yards receiving each year. He had an astonishing 11 touchdowns in 2015 and recorded seven last season.
What’s great about Ford is that he can line up just about anywhere along the offense and excel there. With all of the screens the Chiefs like to do under Andy Reid and Alex Smith, Ford would be an excellent option to get the football to in those situations.
The main reason I don’t like drafting a wide receiver is that I think the Chiefs are going to have a breakout season from Conley in 2017. Maclin had a down year, but the guy is still young and will bounce back.
Drafting someone like Ford only makes sense if the Chiefs plan to move on from Smith in the next few years. He’d be a great weapon for the next young quarterback of this team.
