Over the past several weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs offense has jumped out to early leads. The team must do better at capitalizing on these leads.

I try to stay away from making the generic comparisons of football and the military, but the Kansas City Chiefs need to take a page from the Marines: “When your opponent is down, finish the fight.” That was the mantra I took to heart during my time in uniform, and it is one that would serve the Chiefs well as we draw close to the end of the 2016 NFL season.

Over the past four weeks, the Chiefs have outscored their opponents in the first half 67-36. That’s a 31 point difference. However, the Chiefs have finished that stretch with a 3-1 record, outscoring their opponents by a total of just 9 points. How is that possible? Because the Chiefs offense is shutting itself off in the second half of these games.

Hey, I understand the thought process. The Chiefs jump out early on their opponents and then look to rely on the defense and the clock to secure a win. It’s not a terrible strategy, and it has worked more often than not this season. Kansas City is 10-4, so you can’t point to this strategy as some big derailment to the season. Overall, it has worked.

However, as we get down to the wire and every game matters more and more, the Chiefs have to get more aggressive. It is time to show the rest of the NFL that Kansas City is a force to be reckoned with. The Kansas City Chiefs need a statement game. That requires a strong offensive performance for a whole four quarters.
