Frank Zombo

There are many fans and analysts who are worried that the Kansas City Chiefs need veteran leadership at inside linebacker. If that is the case, and it may well be, then I would advocate Frank Zombo being moved to the spot over any of our other options. This is a role that Zombo has filled for the Chiefs before.

The only true concern here is that Frank Zombo isn’t the athlete that Derrick Johnson is. That would limit his ability to fill the multiple roles that Johnson is called upon for. However, Zombo is a smart football player who reads the run well. He is also capable in short area coverage and as a pass rusher. While he wouldn’t be the same level of player, Zombo is probably the most qualified to take on all the roles that Johnson held.

The biggest benefit I see here is that Frank Zombo understands the Chiefs defense and the various assignments. That means there is very little learning curve for him to get caught up. He would be able to step in right away and provide a leadership role. That is extremely valuable and gives him an edge over any free agent signing.
