Chiefs “Gimmicky” Play calling

Following the Kansas City Chiefs 26-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders in Week 6, Raiders coach Jack Del Rio called the Chiefs offense “gimmicky”. That hit a sour cord with a number of Chiefs fans, especially since that game seemed to be more about KC just running all over the Raiders. However, that doesn’t mean Del Rio was wrong in a larger sense.

The truth is that the Kansas City Chiefs are more than willing to dive into their bag of tricks whenever it suits them. Screen pass to a defensive tackle? Sure thing. Tight end on a jet sweep? No problem. However, at its bare bones, this is a West Coast Offense and that can still frustrate a lot of defenses.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Chiefs really have opened up their bag of tricks. I think Albert Wilson is still running across Georgia with nothing to stop him. However, I’m not the only one thinking about that. Right now the Raiders defense is having to account for every single trick play and wrinkle the Chiefs have shown…and doing it on a short week. Sometimes it’s the bigger picture that is most important.
