Ugly: Phillip Gaines

What the hell happened to Phillip Gaines on Sunday? Before the primetime game, Gaines was looked at as a young talented corner to pair across from Marcus Peters, but the kid almost blew the game for his team.

Fortunately, the offense finally decided to wake up and bail him out, but still… What happened?

Bennie Fowler, who I doubt many people even had heard of, took a pass from Siemian 76 yards down the field for a touchdown. That score put the Broncos up by eight points with less than four minutes to go in the game.

Had the Chiefs lost, it wouldn’t have just been on Gaines, no. The offense had played poorly (we’ll get to that in a bit), but this looked to be the nail in the coffin at the time for sure.

The tweet above shows just how rough of a night Gaines was having on the gridiron. In case you have problems viewing it, it says that Gaines was thrown at a total of eight times. In those eight attempts, Siemian completed six passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Holy moly, that’s awful.

It’s great that Marcus Peters isn’t getting thrown at, but now that other corner spot is a liability, and hopefully Gaines figures it out soon.
