Kansas City Chiefs: Rumors Circulating About A Change At Quarterback
By Ben Almquist
Tony Romo
Dallas Cowboys
The Kansas City Chiefs will have to take advantage of whatever situation presents itself if they choose to move on from Alex Smith. The most interesting situation in the NFL right now is that of Tony Romo. Last week, Romo officially handed the reigns of the Cowboys offense over to rookie Dak Prescott. That, of course, means Romo is likely to leave Dallas this offseason.
In the eyes of most pundits, Tony Romo is now the most attractive option at quarterback for the upcoming season. He has tons of experience and success to bring to a new team, but also a number of question marks. The most notable issue is whether or not Romo is even truly healthy enough to play a full season of football ever again.
From a financial point, teams will likely look to wait out the Cowboys. Dallas is certainly going to explore their trade options first. However, if I’m an NFL team, I’m not paying $14 million and whatever other compensation for a 36 year old coming off of two back injuries. Call me crazy, but that doesn’t seem like a sound investment. If Romo hits Free Agency, he will be much cheaper.
That leads us to the real concern though. Can Tony Romo even play any more? The Cowboys will tell you “oh, yeah, of course he can”. However, without seeing him on the field, how can anyone make that call? I’m not even sure that I’m buying Romo is fully healthy. Plus, when Romo is good to go, you still get a ton of up and down play from him. Just what would the Chiefs be buying here?
