Kansas City Chiefs

A time honored tradition of being a Kansas City Chiefs fan is swearing that the backup quarterback is better than the starter. Yes, this line of thinking defies all logic, but that doesn’t stop us. From Tyler Thigpen to Damon Huard. From Brady Quinn to Chase Daniel. Now, it is Nick Foles who must be better than Alex Smith.

The Chiefs signed Nick Foles this offseason to come in and be the backup for Alex Smith. At the time, it was seen as a simple move. The Chiefs were expected to contend for the Super Bowl and needed a reliable backup. Foles knows Andy Reid’s system and is relatively cheap. Not a terrible situation at all.

Financially, Nick Foles is a quality option because he is already accounted for in the Chiefs salary cap. That would make the release of Alex Smith a net gain in terms of money. That money could be used in other, much needed, areas. Going with Foles as the starter also wouldn’t preclude the Chiefs from drafting another quarterback to groom.

Nick Foles definitely has the arm strength that Chiefs fans are clamoring for. However, his accuracy and zip leave a good bit to be desired. There is also the question of his resume. While Foles made a name for himself under Chip Kelly in 2013, the truth is that he’s been a disaster since then. He has been shipped out from the Eagles and Rams since that one quality season.
