First Down: Andy Reid…Genius Or Idiot?

Kansas City Chiefs fans love a good ol’ piece of trickeration. Well, at least when it works. That was the case when the Chiefs threw a screen pass to defensive tackle Dontari Poe at the goal line a few weeks ago. However, the same reaction was not found when the Chiefs ran a tight end sweep with Travis Kelce and lost yards this week.

On first and goal, the Chiefs handed the ball off to Travis Kelce at the four yard line, hoping he’d be able to turn the corner against a defensive back. Unfortunately, William Gholston beat his block and stopped Kelce deep in the backfield. Short of a turnover, it was the worst possible outcome for the play. Yet the Chiefs were still in range to score. Chiefs Kingdom didn’t see it that way.

Well, while I can appreciate a good overreaction, let me just explain a couple of things. First of all, let’s be honest, this play was only “bad/cute/whatever” because it didn’t work. If Kelce got into the endzone we’d all be talking about his latest dance. Second, Andy Reid just used that first and goal to add a new wrinkle to the playbook. Opposing teams now actually have to gameplan for a tight end sweep in that situation. Really not all that bad. Besides, the next two plays were much worse.
