Kansas City Chiefs: Top Ten Draft Targets For 2017 v. 2
By Ben Almquist
Kansas City Chiefs Draft Target No. 2
JuJu Smith-Schuster – WR – USC
When the Kansas City Chiefs hired Andy Reid as head coach, it was expected that the passing game would improve dramatically. While it has improved, overall Chiefs fans have been disappointed. After a slow start to the season, USC’s JuJu Smith-Schuster is showing that he may be the answer to the problem.
Smith-Schuster possesses an ideal build for an NFL wide receiver. A good mixture of speed, athleticism, and power. A very solid route runner who shows an appreciation for the finer points of his position. Has the ability to put in a second gear and create separation from defenders. Very dangerous with the ball in his hands.
The slow start to the 2016 season is one reason many scouts are still low on Smith-Schuster. The other reason is his role in a major fight during a practice early this season. Both issues warrant strong consideration, but I’m having a hard time making either out as a big deal.
JuJu Smith-Schuster would bring a very similar skill set to the table as Jeremy Maclin. The difference is that Smith-Schuster is the better athlete. On numerous occasions, he has demonstrated the ability to take over a game and be a dominant force. That is exactly what the Chiefs need to be looking for.
