The KC Chiefs take on the Carolina Panthers this week. I went behind enemy lines with Kenan Goyette of Cat Crave.
Riding a four game winning streak, the Kansas City Chiefs are headed to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Panthers.
Despite their 3-5 record, the Panthers do pose a bit of a challenge for the Chiefs. Carolina has won their last two game and are one of the best run defenses in the NFL. That will be something KC has to take into major consideration.
Ben Almquist: The Carolina Panthers are a surprising 3-5 this year after a Super Bowl run in 2015. Why the dramatic drop off from last year?
Kenan Goyette: It’s somewhat tough to pinpoint exactly what has gone wrong with Carolina in the first half of this season. It would be easy to say that blame falls solely on the secondary or the defense as a whole, which has been uncharacteristically poor this year. But I think it goes deeper than that. Last season the Panthers, for the most part, had things go their way whereas this year that’s simply not the case.
I don’t want to say that there was an aura of arrogance with this team but it seemed as though they were expecting teams to sort of roll over or be intimidated because of their success last season. That “arrogance,” if you will, doesn’t fall on just the players though. The front office and coaching staff seemed to be expecting to continue their success no matter what they did and that has clearly not been the case. In short, the Super Bowl hangover that everyone talked about is very much real and it left the Panthers in quite a hole to start the year.
Chiefs fans began this season concerned of a similar fate that Panthers fans are currently experiencing. The Chiefs had some obvious holes during the preseason, and early on in the regular season. However, KC seems to have put things together while the Panthers haven’t. I don’t know why Carolina hasn’t looked that good this year. Really, it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
