Kansas City Chiefs: Five Trades To Consider Before the Deadline
By Ben Almquist
With the NFL trade deadline fast approaching, here are five trades the Kansas City Chiefs could make to get get stronger for the playoffs.
The Kansas City Chiefs are absolutely a playoff contender. Currently sitting at 4-2, the team is in the midst of a five game stretch of very winnable games. KC got off to a good start on that stretch by knocking off the New Orleans Saints. However, after this stretch of games, the season gets much tougher. The Chiefs will need to consider some other options to prepare for the end of the regular season and playoffs.
One of the best, but most under-utilized means of improving a roster is mid-season trading. We see it all the time in the NBA and MLB, but the NFL often falls short in that area. It really doesn’t make much sense. If a team is looking to make a playoff run, they should be intent on strengthening the roster. Yet that doesn’t happen often in the NFL.
2016 may be different though. Multiple teams have engaged in the trade market already this year. That includes the Kansas City Chiefs who dealt running back Knile Davis to the Green Bay Packers. The Chiefs only acquired a conditional draft pick though. At this point, it would make sense for the Chiefs to try and add a player as well.
Chiefs Have Needs
On the whole, the Chiefs are a very good team. There are very few holes on this roster, and the depth chart is strong. However, there are a couple of issues the Chiefs do need to sort out. Both the secondary and pass rush are areas of concern when the Chiefs play the upper tier of NFL teams.
The pass rush will get much better for the Chiefs when Justin Houston returns to the lineup. However, even with Houston in the fold, the Chiefs need a reliable pass rusher opposite of him. As for the secondary, there isn’t much help in sight. The Chiefs have a young group of defensive backs and definitely need a veteran presence at corner.
With a couple of savvy additions, the Chiefs can solidify themselves as Super Bowl contenders…
