Best Moments of the 2016 Season – Number 7: Another Walk-Off Win

Early in the season, it appeared that the Kansas City Royals were going to have some trouble scoring runs. This appeared even more evident when the Royals couldn’t get anything going against Twins starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco.

Nolasco was dealing against the Royals, striking out five guys in seven innings and only allowing one run. It wasn’t until the ninth inning that the Royals realized a baseball game was being played and they needed to score some runs.

With Glen Perkins on the mound for Minnesota and the Royals trailing 3-1, Lorenzo Cain singled. Eric Hosmer then tripled to score Cain and make it a one-run game. Kendrys Morales then hit a sac fly to score Hosmer and tie the game up at three runs a piece.

  • The inning ended shortly after, but the Royals were going into extra innings, something that was familiar for them.

Wade Davis got through the ninth inning without any problems, and the tenth inning is when the Royals decided they wanted to end things. Trevor May walked Christian Colon to lead things off and in came speedster Terrance Gore to shake things up.

Gore was picked off at first base, but an error on May allowed him to make it all the way to third base with no outs. Unfortunately, Paulo Orlando hit a line drive and Alcides Escobar struck out, leaving Gore on third with now two outs.

Mike Moustakas walked, which increased the odds of the Royals hitting into an out. Thankfully, May threw a wild pitch and Gore went for it. He was ruled safe and the game was over.

The Twins did challenge the ruling, but the call stood and the Royals had their first walk-off win of the year. It was almost like nothing had changed.
