Kansas City Royals: Top Ten Moments of 2016 Season
Best Moments of the 2016 Season – Number 9: Opening Day
Getting the rings and seeing the World Series banner raised were cool, but Opening Day in itself meant that baseball was officially back. The Royals had a job to do, and that was to start things off with a win.
The KC Royals took the mound for the first time in temporary attire – White jerseys with Royals written in gold letters. There were World Series champions patches on the left sleeve of the jersey. To top it all off, the Royals had their regular blue KC hats, but the white KC was in gold and so was the World Series champions logo on the side.
The Royals had a job to do, and that was to start things off with a win.
The attire made the day even cooler, but the Royals still had business to take care of – Their opponent that day, the New York Mets. The Royals had beaten the Mets in the World Series (how awkward for them) and did the same thing in the first game of the season.
Kansas City got to be in the spotlight on the first game of the year, as the Royals/Mets game was broadcasted on ESPN.
Edinson Volquez was in postseason form, pitching six shutout innings and only allowing two hits. Joakim Soria tried to blow it, allowing three runs, but Luke Hochevar put the fire out. Wade Davis then came in and closed the game out.
The Royals won the game 4-3 on an Opening Day that no one would ever forget.
