Most Disappointing Royals in 2016 – Number 2: Alex Gordon

The only non-pitcher to make this list is Alex Gordon, who had a horrible year at the plate. He was still great defensively, but it was hard to look past his struggles at the dish this year.

Look, we all love Alex Gordon. Despite his struggles this year, this is the guy who hit the game tying home run in Game 1 of the World Series last year, and we’ll never forget that moment.

The image of Gordon pointing to the stands while rounding the bases will likely be what we all associate with the former Cornhusker for the rest of his career.

Gordon signed the biggest contract in Kansas City Royals history this offseason and that made fans happy. Kansas City loves Alex Gordon and they were thrilled to see him stay in town and in Royal blue.

Gordon thanked us by slashing .220/.312/.380 in 128 games and 445 at bats. He struck out 148 times, which was the most in his career. That’s astounding too because Gordon missed several weeks of the season due to injury.

Alex Gordon was able to smash 17 home runs this year, but it was hard to make up for the rest of his offensive struggles. Fans never had the confidence in Gordo to get the job done in 2016, which was so weird after him being the team’s hero time and time again in years past.

I don’t think this is something that we have to worry about next season for Alex. He will have a month longer to rest up this offseason and hopefully will be good to go for one last push with the guys he was brought up with in the minor leagues.

Go Big Red!
