Reasons Royals Missed Playoffs in 2016 – Number 2: Offense has been awful

Remember how I just mentioned “It’s tough to win baseball games when your team gives up runs early on in every game”? Well, it’s even MORE difficult to win baseball games when your offense can’t score runs.

The offense last year seemed to come through in the clutch time and time again, and that Royals magic simply hasn’t been there this year.

Early in the season it was obvious that Alex Gordon was going to have a down year, and he has. After signing the biggest contract in franchise history, Gordon has struggled immensely this season. He’s slashing .218/.314/.376 in 121 games and 418 at bats.

Gordon obviously isn’t the only person to blame for the offense’s lack of production, as a lot of the guys have struggled in 2016. Kendrys Morales had a rough start to the year, but has kicked it into high gear as the season progressed. Him struggling early though no doubt hurt the Royals offense.

The Royals are fifth to last when it comes to runs scored in 2016, and fourth to last in runs batted in. The team ranks 20th when it comes to runners in scoring position, and it’s difficult for any team to win games when you can’t score a man in scoring position.
