Kansas City Chiefs: Breaking Down The 53 Man Roster
By Ben Almquist
Quarterback
Alex Smith, Nick Foles, and Tyler Bray
Cut – Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan
The Kansas City Chiefs came into the 2016 preseason with a big question at quarterback with four men competing for the backup job. That became even more confusing when the Chiefs signed veteran Nick Foles later on. There were reports that the Chiefs were shopping their backups as trade options, but nothing came of it. In the end, Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan were released.
Bray Keeps His Job: There were a lot of different ways that the Chiefs quarterback position could have turned out. That will happen when you have five guys competing for jobs. For my own two cents, the release of rookie Kevin Hogan was a surprise. A rookie quarterback is easy to stash on the 53 man roster. However, the Chiefs chose Tyler Bray as the third string man instead.
The Future?: Chiefs fans will likely continue the “Is Alex Smith elite?” debate, but the truth is that the Chiefs have no immediate need at quarterback. Andy Reid and John Dorsey will likely continue to be on the lookout for a long-term franchise leading quarterback. However, that is not something that can be addressed right now.
